  • WHAT IS AN ADU, or NEXT GEN SUITE?

    An ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT (ADU) is also known as in-law quarters, next gen suite, granny flat, cottage suite, carriage house, or secondary dwelling unit. 


    An ADU is a secondary housing unit that is located on the same parcel of property as a primary residence and must be subordinate in size to the primary dwelling. It can sometimes be attached to the primary residence but is typically detached from it. An ADU must provide a separate entry, independent living facilities, including living, sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities. The kitchen in an ADU must have a sink with running water, a countertop, cabinets, and a stove or stove hookup. 


    Many of Bergstrom Construction clients often build an additional garage, shop or RV garage separate from the exisitng home garage when we build thier ADU, providing a space for the extra vehicles.

We would like to compliment the Bergstrom’s on a job well done. Our project consisted of building a carport into living space and building an attached 4 car garage. We added nearly 500 sq. ft. of living space and 1152 sq. ft. of additional garage space. To complicate matters we asked that part of the new garage space have a vaulted ceiling to accommodate a car lift and that the existing 2 car garage become a "pass through" garage, adding another garage door.
